Hunting the Joe Kurz Georgia WMA

!: Hunting the Joe Kurz Georgia WMA

Well I finally got the chance to go deer hunt out at the Joe Kurz Georgia WMA over the weekend, and I tell you, I was very impressed in more ways than one. This Wild life management area is an excellent Georgia deer hunter location. There were a lot of wide open fields, and a ton of excellent areas to set up and hunt. Mt. Carmel Rd. runs directly through the WMA, and if you turn right on Germany Rd., you have a fairly smooth dirt road that travels down through some outstanding Georgia deer hunting areas. The Flint River borders a large section of the Georgia WMA. One thing I really like was that there was an awesome primitive camping area right on a small lake. But believe me when I say primitive camping I mean primitive camping no water, no electricity, no tent pads, nodda, nothing. Also, make darn sure that if you find yourself there on a Sunday, you darn well better have some food available, because there are no open restaurants anywhere near this wildlife management area on Sunday.

There are a few convenient stores just outside of the Georgia WMA if you're ok with grabbing a bite at one of the convenient stores, bring some food with you. If your like me and most other Georgia deer hunters, your gonna want some real food after spending a long morning in the woods. If your there other than a Sunday, there are a few good options for eating. One is a little pizza joint that I ate at called Kings Pizza Barn. You can get there by traveling just a mile or two on Hwy. 85N (Turn right as you leave the Georgia WMA from Mt. Carmel) The other option in a killer little hole in the wall BBQ joint called Uncle C's and it's approximately ten miles from the WMA traveling Hwy. 85N. If you take Hwy 85S, I found an awesome little diner called Smoke House Diner with home cooked country food and BBQ , just make sure you stay on Hwy 85S, and don't take the alternate that bears off to the right. If you pass this little diner, you will come to a small area that has a take out only restaurant, and another deer processor located beside a convenient store called the Venison Shop, their sign says they specialize in deer jerky, but I've never heard anything about them good or bad.

I found another deer processor exactly ten miles down Hwy. 85N Just across the street from the Uncle C's BBQ restaurant; it's called The Sportsman's Deer Cooler. I have not used them yet, but everyone I talk to has had nothing but good things to say about their quality, and they specialize in Country and smoked sausage perfect for the Georgia deer hunting enthusiast. For directions to the wildlife management area, probably the easiest way is to just map quest Mt. Carmel Rd. City of Gay Georgia, there are several different routes you can take coming from Interstate 85 South out of Atlanta to get their. In all, with all my Georgia deer hunting experiences, this one was great. I went up on a Thursday afternoon, and stayed till Sunday afternoon, I camped out using a small quiet generator and a small electric heater in my tent, didn't shoot or see a darn thing except as I was leaving the Georgia WMA Sunday afternoon, go figure, but all in all it was a great weekend. I would suggest to any Georgia deer hunting enthusiast to give this wildlife management area a try.

Modern Day Norwegian Vikings, Nansen, Roald Dahl

!: Modern Day Norwegian Vikings, Nansen, Roald Dahl

Famous Modern Day Norwegian Vikings

The runic alphabets varied among the different Scandinavian countries. There is no rune for the letter 'Q' in any of the runic alphabets; except in an Icelandic type of rune called 'KVISTANNAN', which means, "Branch Runes."

The reason I tell you about the 'Q' rune is that it is the first letter in the name Quisling. Vidkum Quisling was a Norwegian prophet who has been demonized by the victors of WWII.

He was a Norwegian patriot who tried to free Norway from the chains that bound her. He also wanted to protect her from the Bolshevik invasion of the world.

When Germany invaded Norway, Major Vidkum Quisling announced to the world that he was the new prime minister of Norway. He sided with Germany to fight the evil spread of communism. Nordic ideology and communism cannot co-exist. They are too opposite to each other in ideals.

Britain and the leftist parliament of Norway never forgave him for this.

At the end of the war he was placed on trial and executed by a firing squad. That was 1945. the victors re-write history and the patriots die.

I am very interested in the little know Scandinavian history. This new politically correct world we live in is slowly but surely destroying our history or re-writing it with lies. We have to dig to find the truth. We have to do the same with Quisling.

My interest in Norway arises from the fact that my grand mother on my father's side was half Norwegian and half Danish. My paternal grandfather was all Swedish.

Therefore I have the true blood and DNA of my Viking, Norse men ancestors coursing through my veins. So whenever I get the chance to I write about my Scandinavian Ancestors. And I try to correct the lies.

This following list is for Americans of Norse descent to look back at their distant Viking cousins and be proud.

We all know that the Norwegian Leif Erickson discovered America in 1000 AD.

This names below are from Norway's Golden Age before Socialism put a strong hold on it. There are many unsung modern Scandinavian heroes that you may not know or have forgotten.

Henrik Ibsen, the immortal Dramatist - Peer Gynt.

Edvard Grieg, inspired by Norwegian folk songs. Set Peer Gynt, to music.

Knut Hanson, won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Sigrid Urdset, steeped in Norwegian tradition won a Nobel prize.

Edvard Munch, the great imaginative painter whose marvelous frescoes decorate the Oslo University Hall.

Kirsten Flagstad, the famous Wagnerian Singer.

B Jornstjerne BJornson, national poet, composed the moving National anthem JA, Vi, Elsker (Yes, we Love).

Gustan Vigeland, The monumental sculptor.

Dr. Fridtjoff Nansen, sportsman, scientist, explorer, author, humanitarian regarded as the greatest European of the 20th century.

Roald Amundsen, first reached the magnetic Pole and beat Scott to the South Pole.

Sondre Nordheim invented down hill sking.

Roald Dhal, who's children's stories (Willie Wonka) have been loved world wide.

Oscar Mathisen, the greatest of all speed skaters.

Sonja Henie, the greatest of all figure skaters.

Trygue Lie, the former General Secretary of the U.N.

Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame.

There I have started a list for you. Now continue it and teach it to your children and grand children.

Don't let them become so politically correct that they forget their rich heritage and where their ancestors came from.

Fishing Power Plant Lakes

!: Fishing Power Plant Lakes

One interesting fact that many people don't realize about Texas is that there are relatively few natural lakes in the entire state. However there are hundreds of lakes in the state that have been artificially dammed. The one major lake in Texas that is a natural lake is Lake Caddo in east Texas. According to Caddo Indian legend the lake was formed during a giant flood that caused a log jamb on the Red River and backed water up into the Cypress Bayou watershed, forming the lake. Caddo Lake was artificially dammed in the early 1900's for flood control when oil was found in the area.

Most of the other large lakes in Texas were formed by dams built by the Corps of Engineers on major rivers to provide hydroelectricity, store water and provide flood control. Many of these Corps of Engineers lakes, with the help of Texas Parks and Wildlife have become excellent lakes for fishing and recreation.

Power plant lakes can provide some very good fishing, even at the most difficult times of the year. At the spillways where the water is being returned to the lake the splashing of the returning water adds oxygen to the water and can attract a large number of baitfish which in turn brings in many species of other fish.

Sometimes during the long hot dog days of summer when bass fishing can be extremely slow, I have had some productive days fishing the power plant on Lake Lavon. The spillway is marked and boats are not allowed in the area beyond the markers. However you can cast toward the spillway and the fast running water. The closer the cast to the splashing water of the spillway, the better your chances of catching a fish. Many times I have rigged a plastic worm and cast as far into the fast moving water as possible and let the bait flow with the current, bouncing along the bottom until it is picked up by a fish. Other times I have used a Zara Spook, Rattle Trap, or Beetle Spin to catch fish. The oxygen rich water draws a large number of fish into a small area of water, making them easier to catch. They seem to be less particular to which lure they strike and some days one lure will work while on another day something else will work. When water is flowing from the spillway and the power plant is running full blast, the fish generally become more active. Sometimes large numbers of schooling sand bass move into the area boiling up the surface of the water in a feeding frenzy. They can be caught one after another on white Road Runners or nearly any lure that has a flashy surface.

A second Texas power plant lake that I have spent some time on is Lake Monticello. Monticello is about 10 miles southwest of Mount Pleasant Texas and even in the winter has a warm water temperature of 72 degrees due to the power plant's use of water for cooling the electric generators.

One winter day in January I launch my boat onto Lake Monticello and the water temperature was so much warmer than the air temperature that a thick layer of steam rose from the waters surface. More like fog than steam but never burning off as the sun came up, but lingering throughout the day. As I moved towards the power plant I notice several schools of Largemouth Bass breaking the surface of the water chasing baitfish. I caught several on a blue chrome Rattle Trap. It may seem unusual to see this type of action during the winter months on other lakes, but not on the warm waters of Monticello. Moving closer to the power plant spillway I caught fish on white Road Runners, plastic worms and crank baits. The fish were active more springtime rather than winter time.

On warm water reservoirs like Monticello the spawning season will start sometimes one or two months earlier than on other lakes and can offer some good fishing throughout the winter months. Power Plant lakes like Lake Lavon that adds rich oxygen levels to the water will give an angles new possibilities to explore during the hot days of summer. Once you have discovered the advantages of fishing power plant lakes you will be hooked. Why not add to your fishing fun and try a Texas power plant lake next time you go fishing..

Weight Reduction - Self Motivation is Better Than Diet Pills!

!: Weight Reduction - Self Motivation is Better Than Diet Pills!

Many say that losing weight is very tough for them and the extra kilos are piling up no matter what they do. Some feel that they aren't losing weight at all. If you are among those who feel that while others lose four kilos a month, and you are losing just two, don't give up. Self motivation is the key to losing weight.

Self motivation helps a great deal in weight reduction. If you are eating right, exercising enough and doing what all is required of you in order to lose weight, then you are on the right track. You just need to believe in yourself. Even if someone doesn't notice that you actually have lost weight, don't lose hope. Be truthful to yourself. You know you are losing weight, so keep up the good work.

Expecting others to motivate you to lose weight or noticing every time you lose some pounds is not right. Determine the objective of your weight loss program. Obviously you aren't losing weight for your neighbour. It is you who wants to lose weight and look fabulous; then it's important for you to notice the weight loss and not the whole world. The world will notice one day. You just need to follow what you have been doing up till now. The rest will follow.

Set goals for yourself. It is important for you to make realistic goals. Don't expect your body to lose 10 kilos in a week. Be patient. One thing that you must understand is that the amount of weight you lose and the speed at which you lose depends on a lot of factors. These factors are age, metabolism rate, how much overweight you are, how long you have been overweight, if you have any other health problems, diet and amount of physical workout.

Understanding your body is very important. Different people lose weight at different speeds. It also important to note that in the beginning stages when you have just started to lose weight you will notice that you are shedding kilos rather quickly later the speed slows down as the body gets immune to the weight loss program. A change in the program here and there might again speed up weight loss but expecting too much from your body is not good. You must remember the old adage here that says, "Rome was not built in day".

So if your weight loss program is succeeding reward yourself. Boost yourself by saying, "I have done a good job and I will not leave this spirit." If the weight loss isn't happening the way you wanted say, "The results will show. I won't give up." This is the true sportsman's spirit. Motivate yourself and the results will show.
